Local Organizations that Promote Early Childhood Literacy:

Akron-Summit County Public Library The Akron-Summit County Public Library provides resources for learning and leisure, information services, meeting spaces, and programs for all ages that support, improve, and enrich individual, family, and community life.

First Book- Greater Akron First Book-Greater Akron, an affiliate of the national First Book organization, distributes more than 10,000 books to children from low-income families in the region each year.

Reach Out and Read- Akron Children’s Hospital Reach Out and Read is a national nonprofit that promotes the development of early childhood literacy skills by partnering with medical professionals to deliver new books to children and encourage parents to make reading aloud a part of their childcare routine. Akron Children’s operates Reach Out and Read through its affiliated pediatric offices and the Locust Pediatric Care Group.


Dolly Parton Imagination Library
Through the United Way of Summit County, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library provides preschool children free books through age five. Each month, a brand new, age appropriate book is mailed to every child enrolled.


Center for Literacy- University of Akron-
The UA Center for Literacy is a multidisciplinary team of educators and scholars who serve the community by promoting teaching, learning and professional development around traditional and new literacies.
